Helen's Diary

This is a transcription of some diaries I bought at an antique store near Toledo, Ohio. When the diary starts in January 1937, Helen is a young wife and soon to become a new mother. If you wish to read it, it's best to start with the first post - January 1937 (my oldest post) - and then follow along with her everyday life.

THE JEWISH NEW YEAR [Helen writes:] 5698 year

Today and tomorrow, Hebrews will celebrate the festival of the New Year, or Rosh Hashana. The religious services incident to the celebration usher in the year 5698. These days are referred to in the Talmud as the days of judgment in which the lot of each Hebrew is determined for the following year.

It is, therefore, a time of religious and moral reckoning: Every Hebrew takes inventory of his religious duties as performed during the last year and of his moral status in society. After righting himself, man to man, he goes to synagog to implore forgiveness for his shortcomings and to invoke Divine approval for himself and his family and his friends for the coming year.

The day a joyous and optimistic character and is, at the same time, one of solemnity and sacredness. It is a period of introspection and consecration. The religious services emphasize that the door to improvement and betterment is constantly open.

At Rosh Hashana, friendships that have been severed during the year are renewed with the greeting, the golden wish – “Loshono Tovo Ticosavo” – “May you be inscribed for a Happy New Year!”

Rosh Hashana is the first of the ten days of penitence, culminating in Yom Kippur, the day of atonement.
